This statue of St Francis waits for us in a field in Assisi. Assisi has been a deep part of Italian culture since the time Francis joyfully sang in the streets even as he begged for food and lived the life of a poor one of God. Blessed Alberione is not contrasted to Francis. He realized that the gospel is preached and when necessary we use words. The first book people read, Blessed Alberione reminded us, is the book of our life. When we visit the birthplaces of these two heroes of the church our own hearts will reflect the light they put on a lampstand for all to see.
